Description:
The Sanctuary Wildlife Care Centre was first started in 1993 in Alnwick when the owners Kim Olson and Allan Pettersson returned to Northumberland from studying wildlife management and working in a game sanctuary in Tanzania.

From picking up one gull with a broken wing and successfully releasing it back to the wild, the Sanctuary now receives and treats almost a thousand injured or abandoned wildlife cases each year, without discrimination and the aim is still the same - to release the animal back to the wild.

The Sanctuary today.......

Now located in a once-derelict 18th century farmhouse, set in 8 acres, the Sanctuary is 3 miles north of Morpeth just off the popular Northumbrian Coastal Route and is today home to over 150 resident animals.

The new visitor centre was made possible with grants from 18 funders to create an exciting and innovative education and recreation attraction that is unique in the north east.   The new centre is accessible to all and offers new opportunities and experiences for visitors of all ages and abilities

  • Whether out in the woods, on safari in Africa, or at a wildlife centre in Northumberland - there are two things you need lots of if you want to see wild animals - patience and peace and quiet, but if you have both you might glimpse some of The Sanctuary's long-term residents including foxes, badgers, barn owls, squirrels, tawny owls, hedgehogs and rabbits.
  • As well as the wildlife, there are donkeys, ponies, goats and a real assortment of other creatures that were all in need of a new home, from degus to ducks and chipmunks to chinchillas, all have a story to tell.
  • Have loads of fun in our play area and try out the exciting bird's nest swing, suitable for children of all abilities.
  • Other activities include pony rides, toy tractor rides, train spotting, arts and crafts, wildlife quizzes for the kids and mums and dads.   You won't be bored!!!
  • We have a small indoor tearoom which also has a soft play area for younger children.  This tearoom looks directly out onto the fenced-in play area, so parents can enjoy a quiet break while watching their children play in safety.
