Description:
Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Ltd is a new type of development company set up to develop the economy of the Hadrian’s Wall Corridor through managing the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall. This involves protecting the archaeology, landscape and environment of the Scheduled Monument whilst undertaking the UNESCO requirements to increase access to World Heritage by increasing educational and visitor interpretation opportunities. HWHL will achieve increased access to this important site and its component sites and the stunning landscapes in which the Wall sits through a vigorous programme of upgrading the interpretation and facilities and existing museums along the Wall Corridor, creating the ‘Frontier’ narrative and linking each site to the Frontier concept in a unique way, managing the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail and Hadrian’s Cycleway and developing other circular walks and cyclepaths through the Corridor.
The Company will be responsible for leading on the development of higher quality facilities for visitors, ensuring all developments are sustainable and ensuring as many visitors as possible use sustainable transport options. Underpinning and critical to the developments and management of visitors outlined above is the strong communication of the universal value of the Hadrian’s Wall Frontier system and developing a stronger understanding and appeal to visit the destination and learn more in both local, domestic and international markets. This involves building the brand of Hadrian’s Wall Country (HWC) as a key destination in Britain. Animating HWC will be key to success.
HWHL is funded by four agencies: One North East, North West Development Agency, English Heritage and Natural England, with differing requirements to fulfil parts of the role outlined above. It is recognised that it is the development of the sum of these parts which will create a compelling leading destination for Britain offering inspirational heritage and spiritually uplifting outdoor educational and tourism based visits creating the twin benefits of jobs and spend for local communities. It is also recognised that many of these changes will be achieved through partnership working and the influence of HWHL on other related agencies.
Our VisionHadrian’s Wall will be world-renowned for best practice in World Heritage Site management, for the quality of the visitor experience and for its contribution to the local and regional economy through sustainable tourism.
Our MissionTo maximize the contribution Hadrian's Wall can make to the social, economic and environmental regeneration and well-being of local communities through sustainable tourism development.
