Description:
A great place for kids to run about, kick and throw things, walk, eat ice cream and generally relax.

The Column of Liberty, rising dramatically high above the treetops, is the first sight visitors have of this impressive landscape garden created by the Bowes family in the 18th century. Spanning 160 hectares (400 acres), Gibside is a 'grand design' of spectacular vistas, winding paths and grassy open spaces. At key points there are decorative garden buildings, such as the Palladian chapel, Georgian stables, greenhouse and the ruins of a bathhouse and hall. There is a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere, and visitors will feel themselves very close to nature as much of Gibside is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
