Description:
Life is an exciting place where science comes alive in a fun and funky environment! We want to inspire curiosity and encourage you to uncover new things about Life.

Whatever your age, if you're curious about the world around you, there's something for you and your family at Life.

From sniffing the smog in Mexico City to coming nose to nose with your ninety year old face, our Human Life exhibition will have you entranced. Take part in a live science show with our awesome explainers, enter The Dome for a visual journey unlike anything else in the region, and enjoy the thrills and spills of our crazy motion ride.

At Life our mission is to:

• Inspire curiosity in science through an imaginative programme of exhibitions and events, to raise standards in science education for young people and to engage everyone in contemporary science issues, such as climate change and stem cell technology.

• Provide substantial annual funding and state of the art facilities on site to support world class scientific research in medicine.

We aim to create a vibrant and exciting focus where science is explored and debated in the north east of England.

The Centre provides:

  • An exhibition based on the theme of "life" offering live science shows, an interactive dome theatre, hands on displays and family-based laboratory workshops
  • A schools programme based on a suite of laboratories and debating rooms
  • An annual lecture and debating series featuring popular and respected science communicators
  • Management for the Newcastle Science Festival
  • Outreach activities to disadvantaged or under achieving groups in the North east.
  • 100,000sq feet of laboratory space providing a campus for world-class, University-based research in stem cell, genetics and regenerative medicine
  • Major conference facilities
Life is a partner in Newcastle Science City and aims through its Rediscover Programme to provide insight into the science and issues surrounding the four key topics of stem cells, ageing, energy and renewables, and nanotechnology.

Life also provides a location for a new and unique integration of science, business, education and economic development. It is establishing new approaches to translating scientific research into applications, creating an environment where science and business can work and develop together. It is establishing world class facilities for scientific research. It aims to bring about major improvements in young people's participation and achievement in science.

It is helping to transform the City of Newcastle and the City region.

First open in May 2000, the £70m Centre is one of fourteen UK Millennium landmark projects. Designed by award-winning architect and urban designer, Terry Farrell, the site offers a unique, stylish and architecturally striking setting.
