Tucked away in the east of Gateshead, Bill Quay Community Farm opened in 1986 and is a partnership between Gateshead Council and Bill Quay Community Farm Association – a voluntary group with charitable status.
Together, our team of staff and volunteers has created a thriving and dynamic project to educate and entertain the local community.
Our Animals
Bill Quay Community Farm specialises in the husbandry of endangered breeds including cows, goats, rabbits, pigs and sheep. Our Longhorn Cattle and flock of Hebridean sheep tour Gateshead’s nature reserves as part of a programme of conservation grazing. We are now a Rare Breed Survival Trust Approved Conservation Centre.
A jewel in the Gateshead Landscape
This rural haven is set on the banks of the River Tyne and is a valued urban green space with Green Flag Status. We’ve returned the landscape to its original pre-industrial condition by re-establishing woodlands, grasslands, wetlands and hedgerows. Using a mix of traditional crafts, skills and vocational training initiatives, the farm supports a diverse medley of flora and fauna.
We’re accredited through Defra’s Access to Farms and DCFS’ Learning Outside the Classroom schemes, confirming Bill Quay Community Farm as a quality and safe destination for school visits.
Inspiring local artists
With its panoramic views of the River Tyne, Bill Quay Community Farm has inspired many creative collaborations. There is a host of striking and original art works displayed which add another dimension to your visit.
The Green Flag Award®
The Green Flag Award® recognises the best green spaces in the country. In 2010, Bill Quay Community Farm had already been awarded a Green Flag and has now been presented with a Special Award because of the outstanding benefits the site has to offer.
