Description:
Auckland Castle has been the home of the Bishops of Durham for over 800 years, and is still the Bishop's official residence today. This historic building is the administrative centre for the Diocese, as well as a notable tourist attraction. The Castle is open to the public from Easter Monday until the last Sunday in September. The historic building, with its magnificent Chapel, Throne Room and Long Dining Room, is already the administrative centre for the Diocese, and a notable tourist attraction, as well as being the Bishop's home. Now, as part of an imaginative development programme a former self-contained flat , where Queen Victoria is reputed to have stayed, has been tastefully refurbished to provide excellent, fully equipped facilities for meetings and conferences.
The Castle also has excellent facilities for weddings, concerts and social functions and the scale of charges is negotiable for charities or diocesan, ecumenical or education purposes.
As a centre for education and tours, the Castle offers insights into English history since the Norman conquest. In addition, visitors and parties, whether old or young, can experience the exhibition, created in the old medieval kitchens, about St. Cuthbert and the role played by the Prince Bishops in the North.
